Project Zomboid Keybinds and Controls: Full Keyboard, Mouse, and Controller Guide

Project Zomboid Keybinds and Controls at a Glance

Project Zomboid keybinds and controls follow a classic WASD layout with an isometric mouse camera. WASD moves your survivor, Shift runs, E interacts, and Space shoves zombies. Right-click opens the contextual menu for every object, so most actions start with a mouse click.

The Indie Stone’s survival sandbox ranked 28th on the Steam Most Played chart on October 20, 2026, with 54,987 players online and a daily peak of 73,259. One wrong key at the wrong moment ends a run, so a clear keybind reference matters more here than in most games. Most keys are rebindable in the game options, though a few are fixed.

Stat. Project Zomboid costs $24.99 on Steam and still ranks inside the top 30 most played games, which means thousands of new survivors search for these controls every week.

Project Zomboid Default Keyboard Controls

The Project Zomboid default keybinds below cover movement, combat, and interaction. Left Mouse Button selects and attacks, while Right Mouse Button opens the contextual menu. The mouse wheel or the equals and minus keys zoom the camera.

The E key does three different jobs depending on how you press it. A single tap runs the first action in the contextual menu, such as opening a door. Holding E runs the follow-up action, such as climbing through a window you just opened. Tapping E rapidly triggers an urgent action, such as smashing a window with your arm.

Pro Tip. Use the tap, hold, and rapid-tap behavior of E to skip the right-click menu. Opening a door, climbing through a window, and breaking a window all run from one key, and that saves seconds when a horde closes in.

Project Zomboid Combat Controls

Project Zomboid combat controls center on Left Mouse Button to attack and Left Ctrl to aim. Holding Left Ctrl makes your survivor face the cursor. The longer you hold it, the more accurate your attack becomes. Moving while you hold it makes you sneak, which makes less noise.

ActionDefault Key

AimLeft Ctrl or Right Mouse Button (hold)
Shove / StompSpace

Space performs an unarmed shove, or a stomp on a downed zombie. It is your most reliable defensive tool before you find a good weapon. In hardcore reload mode, R removes and inserts magazines, and X racks a round into the chamber.

Project Zomboid Vehicle Controls

Project Zomboid vehicle controls reuse WASD for driving and add a radial menu for every other action. Stand next to a car door until a green square appears, then press E to enter. Press V to open the vehicle radial menu, which lists every available action.

The horn attracts every zombie in earshot, so avoid pressing Q during a stealth run. The V key hides the HUD on foot but opens the radial menu when you stand near a vehicle. Stand outside the car before you press U, because the info panel kicks you out of the driver seat otherwise.

Project Zomboid Controller Layout (Xbox)

Project Zomboid supports gamepads, and the default layout follows the Xbox style. Controls are context based, so the on-screen prompts change with each action. Build 42.19.0 added full controller re-mapping and a new gamepad customization screen, so you can change bindings in the controller tab of the options. The game also runs on Steam Deck with controller support.

The radial menu gives you quick access to player info, crafting, move furniture, zoom, pause, and fast forward. Hold Back, move the Left Stick toward an option, then release Back before the stick to choose it.

How to Rebind Project Zomboid Keybinds

Project Zomboid lets you rebind most keys in the game options under Key Bindings. Left-click the binding you want to change, then press the new key. The new key appears in the box when the change works. A few bindings stay fixed, so check the list after you set up your layout.

Rebind in this order for the best survival results.

  1. Move Space (shove) to a key near your thumb only if you use Space for other tasks.
  2. Put your most used weapon slot on a key your left hand reaches without leaving WASD.
  3. Check for overlapping keys after you install mods, because some mods remap shared keys.

Run through the options again after each game update, because the in-game Key Bindings screen always shows your real current layout.
